Once a follower, Asia has become a global technology leader. Innovative start-ups, forward-thinking corporations and tech-hungry consumers are driving that evolution. Yet, some countries risk falling behind.
To reap the benefits, they must embrace digitalization.
Today, Asia is home to four of the ten-largest technology companies in the world. The region accounted for 52% of global growth in tech-company revenues over the past decade, 43% of start-up funding and more than
half of spending on research and development. Now
it appears on course to lead the world in digital transformation.
Solid infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and a strong knowledge base propelled several Asian economies to the forefront of innovation. China, for instance, now accounts for 20% of the world’s
unicorns—private companies with a valuation of
$1 billion or more. It also leads the world in AI patent applications, while South Korea ranks third. And Japan leads in terms of AI adoption, industrial robotics and supercomputing.
The continuing rapid growth of Asian economies over the next 40 years will require harnessing the full potential of technology, innovation and, critically, entrepreneurship, according to the Asian Development bank. This could prove challenging in Southeast Asia, where several emerging economies lag on the technology front.
AI adoption, for instance, could boost Southeast Asia’s GDP by 10-18% through 2030. Yet, the region is far behind global peers with just $2 of AI investment per capita. It also lags in terms of digital transformation. Less than half of firms in Indonesia and Malaysia, for instance, are currently on a digital transformation journey.
As Asia enters the golden age of digital innovation, it is more important than ever to embrace technology and digitalization. Those who do not may never be able to catch up. Alibaba Cloud recognizes this challenge and is committed to making sure that nobody gets left behind.
During the Alibaba Cloud Summit 2021, the company launched Project AsiaForward—a program that will make digitalization accessible to governments, enterprises, startups, developers and institutions in seven markets across Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. The goal is to increase prosperity in the digital economy while setting an example for the rest of the world.
Alibaba Cloud will invest $1 billion over the next three years to make that happen. Using its digital innovation platform and technology, it will foster one million digitalization talents, empower 100,000 developers and accelerate the growth of 100,000 start-ups. It will do that through three programs: DigiTalents Forward, AI Forward and DigiEntrepreneurs Forward.
The digital talent enablement program, DigiTalents Forward, already launched two initiatives. In Indonesia, it teamed up with the government on the “Pre-Employment Card” initiative to educate 50,000 digitalization talents this year. Meanwhile, the Alibaba-NTU Joint Research Institute will release the first ever MiniMaster curriculum in digitalization. In the same vein, Alibaba Cloud plans to expand this initiative to over 20 institutions of higher education, developing hundreds of courses.
AI Forward focuses on solving digital challenges for conventional enterprises. The Joint Global AI Innovation Challenge issues a call for developers from around the globe to solve real-world digital transformation challenges. The first of these—Intelligent Weather Forecast for a Better Life—aims to solve maritime meteorology challenges in Southeast Asia.
Many of the technologies that Alibaba used to make 2020 Double 11 a worldwide success are currently on promotion. With industry-leading design and innovation, Alibaba’s technologies promise to help new and established companies of all sizes act on the pulse of digitalization.

Finally, the DigiEntrepreneurs Forward program establishes the Alibaba Cloud Asia Accelerator. This program brings new technology, venture capitalist resources and media resources to the region to accelerate promising tech start-ups.
As Southeast Asia’s emerging economies strive to realize their full potential, AsiaForward will help them leapfrog in their digitalization journeys and build a path to sustainable growth.
