Instant replays, real-time analysis, increased accessibility—technology is revolutionizing the world of sports. Nowhere was that more apparent than the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, where Alibaba Cloud powered a remarkable experience tailor-made for the digital era.
Tokyo 2020 provided an unprecedented opportunity for the International Olympic Committee to champion digital transformation. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Beset by travel restrictions and prevention measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s Olympic Games did not draw thousands of spectators from around the world. Instead, die-hard sports fans had to root for their favorite athletes mostly from afar.
Distance didn’t mean the Olympic Games were not enjoyable. With a raft of digital initiatives and cloud-powered solutions in place, Tokyo 2020 was one of the most engaging Olympic Games yet.
A breakthrough collaboration between Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and Alibaba Cloud – the innovative broadcasting solution “OBS Cloud” – made Tokyo 2020 a memorable event. With work having started in 2018, the deal was a game-changer that made it easier for broadcasters to deliver a seamless experience in a demanding live multi-sports environment. Simply put, sports fans had many ways to connect.
Content+ on OBS Cloud, for instance, provided broadcasters access to a variety of short-form, ready-to-air content produced by OBS. All of that was designed for digital and social media platforms to align with shifting viewer habits. This appealed to millennials. Heading into the Olympics, one-third of millennials based in the U.S. and one-fifth in the U.K had planned to stream highlights online. And around one-third in both countries had planned to follow athletes on social media. Content+ ensured that broadcasters could search for and access this content from anywhere.
Another initiative delivered for Tokyo 2020 was press conference on cloud. This was vital amid Covid-19. Due to ongoing restrictions, foreign press had limited access to key venues. This cloud-based media service delivered live and post-event access with video processing, edit and distribution functions, ensuring that no reporter or journalist was left out.
The Olympic Games are the ultimate sports competition. Every four years, the greatest athletes show us feats that we never imagine possible. They set new records and break boundaries. It is this celebration of human achievement that brings people from around the world together. And while this diverse group of spectators did not share the same physical space this year, TOKYO 2020 Make The Beat!, hosted on AliCloud and using Intel technology, united them in a virtual space.
Tokyo 2020 Make The Beat! fused sound, technology and social media so that fans around the world could take part in energizing venues and encourage their favorite teams and athletes. In the run-up to Tokyo 2020, fans were invited to film themselves as individuals or in groups performing to the beat. Thereafter, they posted their content on social media using the #2020beat hashtag. A selection of the submitted material was displayed during the Olympics as a compilation hosted on Alibaba Cloud technology.
With cloud technology, millions of minutes’ worth of TOKYO 2020 Make the Beat! short videos from around the world was securely hosted together. In turn, this provided fans a way to participate in Tokyo 2020, cheering on their favorite athletes to the sound of the beat.
Many of the technologies that Alibaba used to make 2020 Double 11 a worldwide success are currently on promotion. With industry-leading design and innovation, Alibaba’s technologies promise to help new and established companies of all sizes act on the pulse of digitalization.

Nothing excites sports fans like a close look at the action. Intel’s 3D Athlete Tracking (3DAT) delivered. Hosted on Alibaba Cloud and leveraging Intel's technology, 3D Athlete Tracking (3DAT) gave audiences professional insights into athletes' performance as they competed. Without the need for motion tracking sensors, 3DAT leveraged standard video, AI and Computer Vision to extract over 20 points in 3D on the athlete's body, transforming that data into rich visualizations to enhance broadcasters’ storytelling for key Athletics sprinting events.
