Leading Philanthropists in the Region
are Stepping Up
The environmental scorecard is at the top of the minds of the Rachmats in Indonesia.
They run Triputra Group, founded by patriarch Theodore Rachmat, whose main activities include agribusiness, manufacturing and mining.
His son, Arif Rachmat, believes that philanthropy has always been the family’s lifeblood, which has at times taken priority over business interests.
“It was very important for us, early from a very young age, that the purpose of our life, the reason of our existence is really to make a difference,” he said.
The younger Rachmat, who is the co-founder and executive chairman of palm oil giant Triputra Agro Persada, is well aware of the industry’s bad reputation.
This has spurred his work with environmental agencies on best practices. His firm also partners with villages in Jambi and Central and East Kalimantan, where it operates.
Rachmat said the partnerships improve the economy and welfare of villages, while educating them on forest fire prevention.
His is not an easy cause. Setting rainforests ablaze is the cheapest way to clear acres of fertile soil. In a country where 26.4 million live under the international poverty line, environmental concerns understandably take a backseat.
In fact, the burning land of under two hectares (4.9 acres) is legal under current laws, which translates into a “major problem” during El Nino, Rachmat said.
“It’s all about how we can empower the local communities to be the protectors of the natural forest environment surrounding them, instead of having them to be the cause of forest fires,” he said.
Rachmat hopes that societal improvement would bring about greater appreciation for the environment.
His family has run a social foundation, which sends needy Indonesian students to school, for over two decades now. Their foundation also trains teachers and supports orphanages.
One of their e-commerce businesses also helps famers get their produce directly to customers’ tables, in an attempt to increase their profit margins.
Still, there are many challenges, including access to technology. “The income of small famers is very small. Go-Jek riders (for instance) have the income to afford phones and buy motorbikes.
“Some small farmers have to share one phone amongst the group of farmers,” he shared.

Other philanthropists in the region are hard at work. Singapore’s Lien family has been furthering early childhood education and eldercare through the Lien Foundation.
The foundation also gives a yearly grant to subsidiary Lien AID, an international non-profit committed to enabling sustainable access to clean water and sanitization for Asia’s rural communities.
Over a million people in China, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar have benefited from its programs, said Laurence Lien, a third-generation family member and the foundation’s chairman.
Another philanthropist at the frontier of the fight for a more sustainable future is Chua Thian Poh of Ho Bee Land. The Singaporean property magnate and his siblings started the Chua Foundation in 2015 with SGD 10 million (USD 7.5 million).
The foundation, which focuses on underfunded causes, was launched in memory of their mother, who arrived in Singapore after World War II with little formal education. Although money was tight, she made time for those in need.
Chua also champions healthcare as the chairman of Ren Ci Hospital. The group serves over 3,000 patients at its community hospital, chronic sick units, nursing homes and senior care centers every year.

Asia’s
leading philanthropists
Asia has made progress on the international barometers of income and standards of living but its philanthropists are confronting a somber reality.
The region is far from meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of sustainable targets widely-adopted by governments and corporations with a 2030 deadline.
It is failing on most environmental measures, and particularly on responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) and climate action (SDG 13), according to a 2020 progress report by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
“In fact, the region is not even moving in the right direction,” said Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and the commission’s executive secretary.
The Asia Pacific region emits half of the world’s greenhouse gases, and more than a third of countries there are losing areas of forest, the report found.
Meanwhile, philanthropists said that over 200 million of Asia’s rural poor lack access to clean water. Healthcare causes, while popular, have grown in complexity as countries deal with an unprecedented pandemic and greying populations.
